A book exploration of identity, displacement, and belonging. Through typography, pacing, and material contrast, the book examines the layered meaning of “home” as both a physical space and emotional condition.
This book is centered around the idea of “home,” and explores different stories around it. Since I’ve lived in both China and the U.S., this topic feels very personal to me, and it’s something I often bring into my design work.
In the book, I share my own story along with six artists from different parts of the world. We all have a strong connection to the idea of home—whether it’s where we live now, something we remember, or even something we imagine. Each artist works in a different way: some paint, some document objects from their homes, and others create installations using different materials, which brings a lot of variety into the book.
The book is structured in two main sections. The first half presents ten chapters exploring different aspects of home, while the second half focuses on artist features and their works, concluding with interviews from two of the artists.
For the design, I tried different layouts to keep the reading experience flexible and not too heavy. I used larger images and kept the text more minimal, so readers can focus on what matters. I also used negative space to make the pages feel more open and calm. Some pages are colorful, while others are black and white, depending on the mood and style of each artist.
Through this project, I improved my editorial design skills, especially in how to use images to guide attention and make the content more engaging. I learned how to balance text and visuals, and how different layouts, color choices, and negative space can change the feeling of each page. I also became more aware of how to build a consistent visual flow across the whole book while still allowing each story and artist to have their own tone.
